Parents and teachers must play a more proactive role in monitoring children’s mobile phone use to help nurture a healthy and balanced new generation, experts have said.
A free awareness workshop titled “`Skip the screen, Chase your dream’ — Get Rid of Mobile Addiction” was held on October 20 at Northern Public School and College in the city’s Chandgaon residential area, organized by the International Institute of Mind Training and Counseling. Students and parents of the institution took part in the event, according to a press release.
Delivering the keynote presentation, Dr. Md. Mozaherul Alam, psychologist and psychological counselor, said that mobile addiction now affects people across all age groups—from three-year-old children to those over sixty.
“This addiction is not only damaging mental health but also disrupting daily life,” Dr. Alam said.
“Radiation and light emitted from mobile screens are causing eye damage, with many at risk of partial or permanent vision loss. Many children are even seen eating while glued to their screens, depriving themselves of the taste and pleasure of food.”
He added that excessive mobile use is fostering isolation and emotional distance within families. “To build a healthy future generation, both parents and teachers must take active and responsible steps to regulate mobile use among children,” he emphasized.
A special paper was also presented by Prasanta Singh, Assistant Teacher of the Science Department at Northern Public School and College.
The workshop was presided over by Principal Mohammad Jalal Uddin.
All students and guardians of the institution participated in the session, which concluded with a question-and-answer segment and prize distribution among the winners.
Additionally, two students received immediate counseling to help them overcome mobile addiction.
Teachers Abdus Samad Rubel, Mohammad Mahfuz, Rafiqul Quader Rohit, Prema Chowdhury, Raofia Nusrat, and Sushmita Barua provided overall support to make the event a success.
