Zohran Mamdani Hakikul Islam Khokon was the first Muslim mayor of New York.

The 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has won the mayoral election of the famous city of New York in the United States.

As predicted by NBC News, he won this historic victory by energizing progressive voters and creating a stir across the country. As the progressive camp rejoiced over his victory, former President Donald Trump, Republicans and some Democratic moderates expressed anger.

Mamdani is the 111th mayor of New York. Democratic candidate Mamdani narrowly defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday’s election. Cuomo ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary. And incumbent Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the race last September and endorsed Cuomo.

It has been an unforgettable rise for Mamdani, who started his political journey almost a year ago.

He rose from a relatively unknown state assemblyman to lead America’s largest city. In the span of just five months, he defeated the scion of a powerful New York political family twice.

Now a nationally known political figure, Mamdani had to manage a huge administrative structure, implement his ambitious policies, and influence the national trend of progressive politics. Among his announced programs are a moratorium on rent hikes in rent-controlled flats, universal child care, free bus transport and the introduction of grocery stores run by city corporations.

“I like to think that this moment was predestined,” Mamdani said at a pre-election rally in Queens before thousands of supporters. But when I started campaigning, there was not a single television camera. He added, ‘Four months later, even in February, our approval rating was only 1 percent—we were tied with the candidate who was called “someone else”.’

The impact of Mamdani’s victory will not be limited to New York; It is expected to spark debate across US politics. His main challenge now in New York will be to unite Albany and City Council leaders—many of whom were initially reluctant to stand with him.

At the national level, Democratic leaders will look to how Mamdani has reached out to the public by spreading his message on social media and making the cost-of-living crisis a central issue—which could also guide their own election campaigns. Republicans, on the other hand, are already trying to create new political divisions around Mamdani’s leftist policies.

According to an NBC News exit poll, Mamdani won the vote of nearly every racial group in New York—whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians and other demographics all picked him. His popularity among voters under 45 was huge; He was ahead of Cuomo by 43 points. On the other hand, among voters over 45, Cuomo was leading by 10 points.

Educational differences also played a big role in the outcome, exit polls said. There is also a clear divide between new residents who settled in New York in the last 10 years and voters who were born in New York.

However, Mamdani’s pro-Palestinian stance was the focus of discussion throughout the election. Despite campaigning against him for his Muslim identity and anti-Israel stance, voters ultimately supported him. According to exit polls, Cuomo led among Jewish voters with 60%, while Mamdani received 31%.

In the final weeks of the election, Mamdani and Cuomo engaged in a heated war of words. Cuomo called him “divisive in New York,” while Mamdani criticized Cuomo as Trump’s “puppet.” The night before the election, Trump endorsed Cuomo on social media, saying a vote for Sliwa was a vote for Mamdani.

Exit polls, meanwhile, show a larger share of Republican voters supporting Cuomo than Sliewa—61% of Republicans voted for Cuomo, compared to Sliewa’s 35%.

In an emotional speech late last month, Mamdani said he had come under “racist and baseless” attacks on his Muslim identity. “They want to make this election a referendum on my religion, but I’m fighting against the cost of living crisis for New Yorkers,” he said.

He is going to be the first Muslim mayor in the history of New York. His victory ushered in a new chapter for progressive politics, not just in New York, but across the United States
