More broadly, Pelosi's retirement has created a vacuum in national Democratic leadership, raising questions about the future of a party that has struggled as the opposition in the era of President Donald Trump. A successful lawmaker and prolific fundraiser, Pelosi was instrumental in securing the signature policy successes of Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. He held together a fractured caucus characterized by tensions between progressives and moderates. This made him a prime target for Republicans, who used him as a villain in attack ads to motivate their voters.
