Former US House Speaker Pelosi is retiring

Nancy Pelosi, the 85-year-old Democrat from California and the first woman to serve as former speaker of the US House, has said she will retire from Congress. Pelosi has led House Democrats for nearly two decades, serving two terms as speaker under four presidents. He announced his retirement in a video posted on his X Page on Thursday morning.
For the first time in nearly 40 years, his resignation leaves a vacancy in a heavily Democratic San Francisco-based seat. More broadly, Pelosi's retirement has created a vacuum in national Democratic leadership, raising questions about the future of a party that has struggled as the opposition in the era of President Donald Trump. A successful lawmaker and prolific fundraiser, Pelosi was instrumental in securing the signature policy successes of Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. He held together a fractured caucus characterized by tensions between progressives and moderates. This made him a prime target for Republicans, who used him as a villain in attack ads to motivate their voters.
