He was born on November 10, 1922 in a zamindar family in Beheli village of Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj. Father Karuna Sindhu Roy was a politician and a member of the Assam Provincial Council. Varun Roy matriculated from Comilla-Brahmanbaria Mogra High School in 1942 and passed IA from Sunamganj College in 1947. In 1948, he did BA from Murari Chand College, SylhetJoin the class.

Varun Roy got involved in politics during his student life. He came into contact with the Communist Party as an active worker in the Students’ Federation and became a party member in 1942. Soon he was appointed a full-time worker of the party and the federation. Varun Roy played a prominent role in the Nankar movement in 1947. When the language movement started in 1948, the Bengali language in Sylhet’s Govindcharan ParkHe was subjected to police torture while organizing a meeting in favor of the demand. In 1949, he was arrested on the orders of the government of Pakistan and spent five years in prison. During this time he came in contact with famous politicians including Comrade Moni Singh, Ravi Dham. In 1950, while in jail, he was elected district representative of the Communist Party.

Varun Roy was released from jail in 1953 but was kept under house arrest. At this time, he is in his own villageIn Behili, he took a stand against jotdar and feudalism for the rights of farmers. He was elected a member of the Provincial Council from Sunamganj constituency in the United Front elections of 1954. A few days after the election, he was arrested when Section 92 (A) was promulgated across the country. After his release, he managed the activities of the party in secret for a long time.

After Ayub Khan imposed martial law in 1958, Varun Roy was arrested andServed in prison till 1963. He played an active role in the education movement of 1964, anti-Ayub student movement. In 1965, the Ayub government issued Hulia against him. In 1966 he was elected General Secretary of Sylhet District Branch of Communist Party while in hiding. In 1968, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. At the same time, he is the vice-president of the Central Committee of the Farmers’ AssociationPerformed duties. During the anti-Ayub mass movement in 1969, he limited his public political activities and continued his organizational work in secret. In the 1970 elections, he campaigned for the Communist Party candidate in the Dirai Shalla area from hiding.

When the liberation war started in 1971, he moved to India and took an active part in the war as well as organizing the freedom fighters. heKnapp led the formation of a joint guerilla force composed of Communist Party and student union workers. He organized the training of freedom fighters at Balat camp in Meghalaya.

After the independence of Bangladesh, Varun Roy returned to the country on December 17, 1971. As the central leader of the Bangladesh Communist Party, he started working with the aim of building the organization across the country including the Sylhet region. National Parliament of 1973He also contested in the elections. In 1975, he organized the people of the Haor area of ​​Tahirpur-Jamalganj-Sunamganj and started the ‘Bhashanpanir’ movement, the ‘Jal Jaar Jala Tar’ movement and the ‘Langal Jaar Zamin Tar’ movement by organizing the landless. In 1980, the government arrested him for his involvement in the bank employees’ movement.

Varun Roy as a candidate of the Communist Party in the 1986 National Assembly electionsElected Member of Parliament from Sunamganj-1 Constituency. He played a role in the anti-government movement in 1987 and was imprisoned for this.

Varun Roy retired from active politics in 1990. Later he was involved with the Mani Singh-Farhad Memorial Trust.

He died on December 8, 2009 in Sunamganj.
