In Dumki Upazila, the activities of the Livestock Department are at a standstill due to shortage of manpower.

Due to acute manpower shortage in Dumki Upazila Livestock Department of Patuakhali District, treatment, vaccination, disease control and field level service activities have come to a standstill. For a long time, the responsibility of the entire department is imposed on a livestock officer, and the farmers and animal keepers are suffering to get the services.Lack of prompt service is disrupting agriculture and smallholder production.
According to the sources of the department, at the upazila level, where there is supposed to be an upazila livestock officer, two veterinary surgeons, a pharmacist, two field workers and support staff, there is currently only one veterinary surgeon and one assistant on duty. Emergency disease control activities, regular vaccination programs, poultry and cattle breeding.Most of the services including inspection are not being conducted regularly. The fear of financial loss to farmers is increasing due to the lack of teams at the field level, especially during the winter period of various infectious diseases.
A cow farmer named Almach Hawladar said that when the cow suddenly gets fever, no one is available to call the doctor. Sometimes pick up the phone, sometimes don’t pick up. If there are no two or three doctors in an upazila, how can we continue? Poultry farm Elias raised the same complaintHussain. According to him, it is very important to take quick action when diseases occur in chickens. But many times damage is done without treatment. Upazila Livestock Officer (Additional Duty) Dr. Md. Alauddin said that due to manpower crisis, they are forced to handle urgent work on priority basis. He said that due to the lack of manpower in the office, it is not possible to conduct regular monitoring at the field level. However, with limited manpower, we try to provide the best possible servicedoing
In this regard, the district livestock officer Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman said that there is such a crisis in all the upazilas of the district. Proposals have been sent to fill up the vacancies. There has already been a recruitment circular for vacant posts. He expressed hope that the service structure at the district and upazila levels will be normal only after the recruitment is completed.
