Dumki Upazila of Patuakhali District has been suffering from severe water shortage during the dry season for 2 years.

As a result, thousands of families are in dire straits for drinking, cooking and daily use water. It can be seen that some villages including Algi of Pangasiya Union, Lemukhali and Uttaranchal of Lebukhali Union, West Angaria and West area of Angaria Union and Dumki, Srirampur and North Dumki areas adjacent to Patuakhali Science and Technology University of Srirampur Union, when the dry season comes, water rises in hand-operated deep tube wells. No. When the locals complained to the Upazila Department of Public Health and Engineering, the authorities inspected the ground and confirmed that the water level had gone down.
The victim Md Shahjahan said that the canals in the area are almost completely dry during the dry season. Besides, Pirtala Jamla and Angaria canals adjacent to Patuakhali University of Science and Technology have been filled with garbage and water flow has stopped. As a result, canal water becomes unusable and people are also deprived of alternative water sources.
He expressed fear that due to the lack of clean water, many people are forced to use contaminated water, from which there is a risk of spreading water-borne diseases.

Ali Azam said, “Every year when the dry season comes, the teachers, staff and students have to face water shortage. They are forced to collect water from the neighboring areas to run the college activities. Abu Hanif, a resident of Jhatra village of Angaria Union, said that water is not available even after the installation of deep tubewells. When the dry season starts, it is known from the research that in the past, tubewells were installed at a depth of 800 to 1000 feet in these areas, but two years ago, Barisal Cantonment area and After the installation of the production tubewell in Patuakhali University of Science and Technology, the water level has dropped further, which has a direct impact on the surrounding settlements.
According to relevant sources,In Dumki upazila, 1 thousand 530 government and private about 1 thousand tubewells have been installed. However, in many areas, adequate water extraction is not possible even with the use of tube wells and motors at private expense.
Hossain Ahmad Kabir Howladar, upazila president of the non-governmental NGO organization and director of PSS, said, “The matter has been informed to the concerned higher authorities to reduce the suffering of people’s water. The situation will get worse if quick action is not taken.”
In this regard, Dumki Upazila Public Health Engineer Nipa Akhter said,Recommendations have been sent to higher authorities for installing submersible pumps instead of manual tubewells in future.
