Sheikh Akhtarul Islam (74), ex-lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court expatriate in New York, prominent politician, convenor of Orbit, heroic freedom fighter Sheikh Akhtarul Islam (74) breathed his last at a health care center in New York on Sunday morning, January 4, 2026. Innalillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun. He is the elder brother of Sheikh Atiqul Islam, member secretary of Sheikh Hasina Swadesh Pratavartan Sangram Parishad United States and vice president of New York State Awami League. He was suffering from cancer for a long time. Lived in New York's Long Island. He was the eldest among six brothers and four sisters. The news of his death cast a shadow of mourning on the community. It is known that a nurse of the medical center while giving medicine realized that Akhtar ul Islam is no more. He left behind two sons and two daughters at the time of his death. One daughter lives in Canada by marriage. Although he has been living in New York with his family since 2011, he used to travel to the country regularly due to his work and the country.
Akhtar Ul Islam, the son of a noble family of Vadeshwar, Sheikhpara village of Golapganj upazila of Sylhet, has led as a student leader at the district level since the liberation war. He was active in Chhatra League and Student Union politics in his youth. Before his life in exile, Dr. Kamal Hussain was involved in the politics of the Gana Forum.
The funeral of late Sheikh Akhtarul Islam was held at Masjid Darul Qur'an at 1:00 on Monday, January 5. A large number of expatriate Bangladeshis from all walks of life including Bangladesh Society President Ataur Rahman Salim and General Secretary Mohammad Ali participated in the funeral. After the funeral, the body of the deceased was buried in the local cemetery.
