Boro paddy seedbeds are at risk in Bhangura due to severe winter
Farmers of Bhangura upazila in Pabna are now facing major problems due to winter and dense fog. Since the beginning of Paush month, due to severe cold and fog, Boro paddy seed bed is in serious danger. Due to lack of sunlight day after day and low temperature, plants are not able to produce enough food. As a result, the roots are becoming weak, the roots are rotting due to dew accumulation, and the seedlings are turning yellow and drying up in many places. Field inspection revealed that the farmers have created seedbeds in low-lying areas. Generally, within 10-12 days these seedlings are supposed to be planted in the main land. But in the current climate, that plan is in danger for the time being. Farmer A. Chalam of Barpukuria village said that my seedbed is facing severe damage due to fog and winter for a week.
If the weather stays like this for a few more days, the entire seedbed may be lost.
A. Hannan of Raipara village said that the seedlings have become weak and turned yellow. This is causing concern about future crops. We are adopting various strategies, but the total loss is not being prevented. Farmers are taking various measures to protect the seedbed. Rezaul of Sultanpur village said that in the morning, the accumulated dew from the saplings is being removed with a stick. Some are covering it with polythene at night, while others are sprinkling hot water. Some farmers including Zahidul Islam said that even if they use fungicides, they are not getting the desired results, rather the cost has increased. Farmer Rafiqul said that many seedbeds have already been destroyed. If new seedbeds are to be made, the cost will increase a lot, which is a big pressure for small and medium farmers.
Agriculture officer of Bhangura upazila Sharmin Jahan said that there is a risk of cold injury and fungal attack in seed bed in severe winter. So we recommend using polythene, changing water in the morning and draining accumulated dew. Regular contact is being maintained with the farmers at the field level. If the weather is normal, it will be possible to handle the situation without major damage. However, the Meteorological Office said, winter and dense fog may continue in Konkan for a few more days. Farmers fearFailure to plant seedlings on time can have a negative impact on Boro rice production.
