Maqam has sent letters to the political parties to mention in the manifesto the issue of reconstruction and compensation of the attacked shrines.
A large number of shrines, dargahs, khankas have been attacked continuously since August 5, the historic date of the July coup. Civil society and other human rights, social and cultural organizations of the country have regularly protested this issue and urged the government to take strict action in this regard. But despite the interim government’s official press release and various advisors of the government repeatedly talking about strict measures, no reflection was seen in action. That is why most of the shrines that have been attacked are still abandoned and in many cases the families of the shrines are living in fear. So far, there has been no announcement from the government regarding the reconstruction and compensation of the attacked shrines.
Historically, Sufi society has led the spread of Islam in Bangladesh. That is why most of the citizens of the country are directly and indirectly connected with the Sufi society and respect them. But the social security of most of the citizens and voters who belong to the Sufi community and respect them religiously is now under threat. That is why it is very important to mention this in the election pledge and manifesto of all the political parties that will participate in the upcoming Thirteenth National Parliament Election 2026.
Maqam feels that long-term resolution of the unprecedented attack on shrine culture is essential to maintain the country’s social stability and cultural diversity. For this reason, Maqam has sent letters to 12 political parties with a special request to mention the restoration and compensation of the attacked shrines in the election manifesto announced on the occasion of the upcoming 13th National Assembly elections. The 12 political parties to which letters have been sent are: Bangladesh Nationalist Party – BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat Islami, Jatiya Nagiri Party – NCP, Mass Solidarity Movement, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khilafat Movement, Nagorik Oikya, Bangladesh National Party – BJP,My Bangladesh Party – AB Party, Bangladesh Islami Front, Islamic Front Bangladesh, Bangladesh Supreme Party.
It is expected that the political parties will consider the issue in public interest and play an important role in maintaining the social stability and cultural diversity of Bangladesh.
