Member of Awami League's presidential council, veteran leader, brave freedom fighter and former housing and public works minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain is no more. He died last Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 10:20 am in the square hospital of the capital while undergoing treatment (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 83 years old at the time of his death.

He was arrested on October 27, 2024 from Bhatara Thana area of the capital in the context of the fall of the government after the July 24 movement. Later he was taken to Chittagong Central Jail. While in prison, he was suffering from various ailments related to old age, despite receiving division benefits as per prison rules.
When he fell ill in February 2025, he was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. At that time, the hospital authorities said that he was suffering from various complex diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia.
Later, on the night of August 5, 2025, he fell seriously ill and was transferred from the prison hospital to Bangladesh Medical University Hospital. He was later released on bail on August 14 last year. He was accused in several cases filed in Dhaka and Chittagong. The former minister was released after getting bail in a case of Paltan police station.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was born on January 12, 1943. He won the 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018 national parliament elections as an Awami League candidate from Chittagong-1 (Meersrai) seat. He was also one of the members of the Constitution Drafting Committee of Bangladesh in 1972.
During his long career in politics, he served as Minister of Housing and Public Works and Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. He also served as a member of the presidium of Awami League.
