Veteran politician Tofail Ahmed is in deep sleep

A shining star of Bangladesh politics, former Minister of Industry and Commerce and senior leader of Awami League Tofail Ahmed is no more. (Inna lillahi wa inna lillahi Rajiun). He breathed his last on Monday (June 1, 2026) at 3:30 pm while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 82 years old at the time of his death.
He was suffering from various physical complications due to old age including paralysis for a long time. When his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to Square Hospital on September 28 last year, where he was on life support for a long time. Political life and illustrious career
Tofail Ahmed was born on October 22, 1943 in Kodalia village of Dakshin Dighaldi Union of Bhola. He has shaken the field of politics since his student life. During the period 1966-67, he served as the VP of Iqbal Hall of Dhaka University and subsequently as the VP of Daksur as the convener of the All Party Student Struggle Parishad. His strong leadership in the popular uprising of 1969 forced the then government of Pakistan to release Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He played a heroic role as one of the four regional chiefs of Mujib's army in the Great War of Liberation. In 1972, he was appointed as the political secretary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In his illustrious career, he was elected as a member of the National Parliament for a total of nine times from 1970 to 2024, and has served as the Minister of Industry and Commerce at various times.
In his personal life, he is the wife of Anwara Begum and the only daughter of Dr.Taslima Ahmed is survived by Zaman Munni. His death cast a shadow of deep grief in the political arena.
