The tip of the municipality’s nose occupied by the drain high-rise building! Municipal authorities in the role of silent spectators.
In front of the Jamalpur Sadar Municipality, there has been an allegation of construction of multi-storied buildings by occupying municipal drain and road land. Locals have complained that this building is being constructed illegally on the municipality’s own drain in the area adjacent to Jamalpur Zilla School, Amlapara under Ward No. 2 of Sadar Municipality.
According to the complaint, a group of unscrupulous persons named Haji Ashraf Hossain Morad Gong, during the previous fascist Awami League government, with the connivance of some unscrupulous officials-employees of Jamalpur Sadar Municipality, seized the municipal drain and started construction of multi-storey buildings. Even after the change of government, illegal construction work continues, causing extreme anger and anxiety among the local residents.
Locals claim that construction of buildings on top of drains is causing serious problems in water drainage. During the monsoon season, there is a risk of inundation of nearby roads and houses, which is also a threat to public health.
When the owner of the building, Haji Ashraf Hossain Morad, was contacted in this regard, he said in response to the questions of the journalists.
“We have informed the headquarters municipal authorities and the district administration. We are continuing to manage and work with them. If you have anything to say, talk to the municipal surveyor or the municipal engineer.”
However, when the Jamalpur Sadar Municipal Authority and District Administration were contacted about the matter later, they said that they knew nothing about the construction of the building on the drain, which made the whole incident more mysterious. In this situation, the local residents and conscious groups have requested the intervention of the municipal authorities and the district administration to take exemplary measures by removing the illegal multi-storied buildings built on the drains of the municipality. If action is not taken quickly, the local gurus have also warned of a larger movement.
