The traditional Salanga Cattle Market which was once known as Cow Market is notable in Sirajganj district. Salanga is one of the largest and most popular livestock markets. Today, this market is on Monday. Traders from far and wide have started bringing their animals in vans, pickups and trucks. The rush of buyers and sellers has started since morning. Sellers from different areas of the district come to sell their animals in this market. Hat. Middle class and low income people have taken loans and loans from various NGOs and reared animals at home for 2/1 in the hope of selling them on Eid. At the end of the year, they reared all these animals with hay, straw, husk, bamboo leaves, raw grass, small rice etc.
Animals grown by eating naturally produced grass and hay in the Bill and river basin areas and domestically fattened animals are more available in this market. Due to the increase in the price of beef feed compared to other years, their production cost has increased. Therefore, farmers and small animal breeders are very worried about the price. The demand for small and medium sized cows and goats has been noticed in this market compared to large cows. Middle class and limited income people rush to buy small and medium cattle. According to Haat Izada, animals worth crores of rupees are sold in this haat every year before Qurbani Eid. About four km from Hatikumrul Road, the entrance to North Bengal: Salanga Haat, which is known as the cradle of the anti-British movement in the west, is carrying on the ancient tradition. A group of reared cows can be seen. Local farmers bring their reared cows for sale in this market. Every year ahead of Qurbani Eid, several crores worth of animals are traded in this market, which plays a big role in the local economy. Raiganj Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Aminul Islam said,This year, the total number of sacrificial animals in Raiganj upazila is 71 thousand 072. The demand for sacrificial animals in the upazila is 26 thousand 328. 44 thousand 748 animals will meet demand outside the country. Salanga Thana of upazila Salanga, Bhuiyaganti, Ghurka, Nalka, Sahebganj and Hatikumrul have a total of 6 animal markets. Salanga is a significant and traditional market among them. Every year on the occasion of Eid there is a medical team at Salanga animal market. Not only local buyers and wholesalers flock to this animal market, wholesalers from different districts of the country come to Salanga market to buy good quality cows. On Eidul Azha, you don’t have to face any kind of harassment when you come to buy cows at Salanga animal market. The haat authorities and local administration are active in animal trade management, security and fake money. Even the traders from far away are given all kinds of assistance starting from strict security measures for animal trade.
KM Roknuzzaman, the owner of the hut, said, Salanga is a traditional cow hut. Many people come from far away to buy and sell sacrificial animals. In order not to have any kind of problem with their safety, we have made strict security arrangements for the buyers and sellers with the help of Raiganj Upazila Administration and Salanga Thana Police. Sallanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashlam Ali said that before the Eid, law and order should not deteriorate in the area including cow theft, so that the Solanga Police Day-Team work is going on at night. On the occasion of Eidul Adha, our police team has been strengthened in Salanga cow markets. Apart from this, special measures have been taken to detect fake money in Salanga cow markets.
