An agreement has been reached with the building owner as the first step in the purchase of a large building in the busy location of Jamaica in Queens, New York’s Bangladeshi population. After prominent businessman and social worker Shahnewaz was elected as the chairman of the board of trustees, the process of buying the building became easier. President of Bangladesh Society Ataur Rahman Salim told BapNews that the value of the building is estimated at 4.9 million dollars. The building will be operated on a commercial basis for the time being keeping in mind the monthly mortgage payments. However, Bangladesh Society will have the necessary space to run its activities. The president said, we will try to pay the full price of the building within 3-4 years. A large-scale community center will then be established there, which can accommodate up to 1,000 people. There will also be a Bangla school, a gym and the main office of the Bangladesh Society. Ataur Rahman Salim said, “There has been no discussion yet on whether the existing building on Whitney Avenue in Elmhurst will be sold to pay off the Bangladesh Center’s mortgage.” Further decisions will be made based on feedback from the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee and former employees. But in the future money will be collected through fundraising.
