Blockade of Dhaka-Chittagong highway: Life of Jatrabari disrupted due to gas crisis

Residents of Shanir Akhra, Sheikhdi, Gobindpur and surrounding areas of Jatrabari in Dhaka have been living inhumane life due to severe gas shortage for a long time. The residents are angry as all the daily activities starting from cooking have been severely disrupted.

The victims held a blockade and protest program in the Shanir Akhra area of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway from Monday (December 8, 2025) morning to demand a quick and permanent solution to this crisis. Men and women of different ages participate spontaneously in it. The blockade caused severe traffic jams on the highways and the common man suffered a lot.

“No gas for six months”

Speakers who participated in the blockade said that the gas pressure in the area has been very low for a long time, many times gas is not available even once a day. They alleged that gas supply has been virtually stopped for the last six months.
Complaints have been made to the concerned department including Titus Gas repeatedly, but no effective solution has been found till date.

MD’s assurances are also of no avail

Alhaj Nabi Ulla Nabi, the BNP candidate for Dhaka-5 Constituency, recently went to the head office of Kawran Bazar Titas Gas and met the Managing Director (MD). At that time the MD assured to solve the problem within a month.
But even after a month, the gas supply in the area is not normal, rather the crisis has become more pronounced. In protest of this, the locals were forced to blockade the highway.

24 hour ultimatum

The blockaders have warned that if gas supplies are not restored within the next 24 hours, more stringent measures will be announced. They also said to block the highway for an indefinite period if necessary.

With the assurance of the police DC, the blockade was lifted

During the siege, a Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the South Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police attended the scene. He said to the protesters,

> “If the gas supply is not normal within the next 24 hours, then I will also stand by your movement.”

After DC’s request and assurance, the residents temporarily lifted the highway blockade.

Public suffering is extreme

Residents complainDue to lack of gas, it has become impossible to cook day by day. Many are forced to buy food from outside as an alternative, which is very expensive for the common man. Students, employees and working people have suffered the most.

The residents have only one demand –

> Gas supply should be restored immediately,Otherwise, the common people will be forced to take the path of a larger movement.
