ACC raid in Kurigram food warehouse, 521 million tons of paddy and 35 million tons of rice disappeared

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted raids in Kurigram district food warehouses and received information about shortage of large quantities of food grains. No trace of 521 metric tons of paddy and more than 35 metric tons of rice was found in 8 warehouses during the raid. Besides, the ACC also said that many of the rice stored in warehouses are infested with insects and unfit for human consumption.

On Sunday (January 11), the day-long campaign was conducted by the Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission. Sabdarul Islam. At the end of the operation, he gave these information to the journalists.

According to the ACC sources, the operation was conducted on the basis of several complaints including collection of low-quality rice in the district food warehouse, use of old sacks instead of new sacks, embezzlement of money by selling food grains in the warehouse elsewhere.

During the operation, 8 warehouses were inspected and a total shortage of 1,176 sacks of rice was found in 4 warehouses. Besides, a large portion of rice stored in a warehouse is found to be infested and unfit for human consumption.

ACC Assistant Director Md. Sabdarul Islam said that only 190 metric tons of rice were found in the number 7 rice warehouse where 721 metric tons of rice was stored. No trace of the remaining 521 metric tons of rice was found.

In this regard, the warehouse authorities claim that paddy has been supplied to the mill owners in view of the office order. However, they could not present any register, record book or necessary documents to the ACC officials.

According to the ACC, verification of the information found in the operation-The process of taking legal action against those concerned is ongoing.
