No politics of personality worship, a message of moderation—orders to remove billboards with PM’s photo across the capital
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman gave a message of administrative order and political restraint by discouraging individualistic campaigns in state management. He ordered immediate removal of billboards, advertisements and banners congratulating him on various roads of the capital.
The Prime Minister gave this instruction directly to the concerned authorities on Tuesday morning. Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon confirmed the matter and said that when he saw a banner with the Prime Minister’s photo in front of the police plaza in Hatirjheel area while leaving his house in Gulshan, he immediately ordered its removal. The banner was removed soon after the directive.
The press secretary also said that various private institutions and companies are promoting congratulatory advertisements using the Prime Minister’s picture in different parts of the capital – which the concerned agencies have been instructed to remove immediately. Earlier too, when Prime Minister’s photo was displayed on an LED screen in Vijay Sarani area, he ordered its removal.
According to political analysts, the prime minister’s move sends a message of emphasis on accountability and institutional politics in administration, moving away from the culture of excessive campaigning and personal worship around the center of power.
Government sources say that a stricter stance may be taken in future to stop the trend of personal or corporate campaigning by creating public grievances or using the state image.A new debate has begun in the political arena around this directive to remove banners from the streets of the capital—an indication of principled politics rather than personal campaigning in the running of the state.
