On the night of May 23, 2026, a sudden cyclone caused extensive damage in various rural areas of Dinajpur’s Birampur upazila. Strong winds and gusty winds have blown away many houses, uprooted trees and affected many families. The affected people who spent the night in fear are now passing the day in extreme misery. According to local sources, the houses of several families in Atarojani and Shiala villages of Ward No. 3 of Deor Union No. 4 of the upazila have been severely damaged. Many families were forced to stay under the open sky after the house rice was blown away by the storm.
Among the victims are Anisur Rahman (father-deceased Abdus Sattar), Khorshed Ali (father Md Azahar Ali), Emdadul Haque (father-deceased Mujibar), Yunus (father-deceased Mozammel Haque), Ramzan Ali (father-deceased Noamia), Zahurul Islam (father-deceased Abdul Jalil), Maqbul Hossain (father-deceased) of Atarojani village. Faiz), Abdul Mannan (father Mofiz), Second Japan (father-Fazlul Haque), Abdul Latif (father Afzal Uddin) and Anjuara Begum and many others. It is also reported that the roofs of several houses in Kuchiamore village were blown away. Dhanghara village of Ward No. 4 of the same union has also received reports of extensive damage in the cyclone. There, homes of Ariful Islam (father Md Moslem Uddin), Zahidul Islam and many other families were damaged.
On the other hand, in Jotbishu Kochpara village of Jotbani Union area, the houses of around 100 families were destroyed in the cyclone. Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman Dulal, Convener of Birampur Upazila Volunteer Team visited the affected area. He inquired about the affected families and observed their overall situation. During the visit, the affected families sought help from the local public representative administration and higher authorities for emergency shelter, food assistance and reconstruction of houses. Many people said that the houses built by their long-term savings were destroyed instantly in the storm. They are now in extreme uncertainty about children and old people. Locals claim,It is important to quickly prepare a list of the affected families and ensure public and private assistance. Besides, the conscious community has called for the construction of sustainable houses and the provision of emergency shelters in disaster-prone areas.
Meanwhile, since the cyclone, there has been disruption in electricity and communication systems in the affected areas. In many places, trees fell down causing problems for road traffic. Local people started cleaning roads and repairing damaged houses through volunteering.
Residents have called upon the rich people of the society, political leaders and humanitarian organizations to come forward next to the helpless families affected by the cyclone.
