Complaint of demand of Tk 5 lakh from mango trader in Jessore, victim did not get help even after calling 999

In Jessore’s Sharsha Upazila, an allegation has been made against upazila Jubo Dal joint convener Shahidul Islam Shahid and his associates for demanding Tk 5 lakh from a mango trader. The complainant businessman claimed that for non-payment of dues, two loads of his cargo were withheld and later extorted with death threats. Even calling 999 for police assistance, he alleged that he did not get the help he wanted.
The victim mango trader Mana Gazi alleged that recently he bought a mango orchard and collected mangoes from there. Later, when Shahidul Islam arrived in front of Martyr’s house in an area of ​​Sharsha Upazila, some persons stopped the two lods on his instructions while taking them in two lods for the purpose of marketing.
According to the complaint, the Ambojhai car was stopped by intimidation and death threats to the drivers. Later, Shahidul Islam demanded a contribution of Tk 5 lakh from Shahid businessman Mana Gazi to take away the mangoes and run the business in the area.
Mana Gazi said, considering the security of life and business, he paid a total of 90 thousand taka in three stages. He was temporarily exempted on the assurance of paying the remaining amount later.
After the incident, he called the National Emergency Service 999 to seek police assistance. He alleged that SI Chiranjit and SI Sharif from Sharsha Police Station went to the spot but did not recover the mangoes or take any action against the accused. Instead, they talked to the people present at the spot and left the ladis with us there and advised them to file a written complaint at the police station.
Later, when Mana Ghazi went to Sharsha police station to file a complaint along with his wife, he claimed that they were misbehaved without accepting the complaint. The complaint further stated that they were ill-treated and physically assaulted inside the police station.
A tearful Mana Ghazi and his wife said, “We were humiliated and tortured instead of seeking legal recourse. Instead of listening to our grievances, we were blamed.”
They further alleged,Effective action is not being taken against the accused due to his association with influential circles of the area.
When contacted, SI Chiranjeet said that the matter is being looked into by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharsha Police Station, so he cannot comment.
However, when the officer in charge of Sharsha police station was contacted, he said that he was not aware of the matter. Later when informed about SI Chiranjeet’s statement, he said, “I don’t know why the SI mentioned my name. Necessary action will be taken after looking into the matter.”
On the other hand, the locals claim that there have been allegations of various irregularities and influence against the accused person for a long time, but many people do not want to speak openly because of fear. The residents of the area said that Shahidul Islam Shahid has been influencing the area for a long time. They alleged that he was involved in various illegal activities and maintained absolute dominance by influencing the border areas. Some local residents, on condition of anonymity, said that this Shahid area is known as Gold Shahid to the countrymen, so many do not dare to open their mouths due to fear of him. They also claim that if anyone protests or complains, there is a danger of being subjected to various forms of harassment and torture.
