
Bir Shreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir (Mahananda Setu) press conference demanding toll free
Chapainawabganj Bir Shreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir (Mahananda Setu) held a press conference to make the toll free. The press conference was organized by Chapainawabganj civil rights realization committee at the foot of Payra square in Bargharia bridge square of the city on Tuesday (June 2). He said that the Bir Shrestha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Bridge built on Mahananda River on June 23, 1994 has been playing an important role in the communication, trade and commerce, education and healthcare of the people of the district. But due to the toll collection on the bridge for a long time, common people, farmers, laborers, students and small traders are suffering financially. Also present in the press conference were Chapainawabganj Red Crescent District Unit Vice Chairman Add Noore Alam Siddiqui Asad, President of CNG Association Md. Asghar Ali, General Secretary Md. Mesbahul Haque, Chapainawabganj Electronic Association General Secretary Md. Iqbal Ahmed and others. Speakers said that the bridge, named after the hero of the liberation war, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, is a symbol of national pride and history. So collecting toll on a bridge established in the name of a national hero is against the sentiments and expectations of the people. Although many important bridges in different parts of the country are toll-free, the people of Chapainawabganj are still deprived of this facility. Three demands were raised to the government from the press conference. The demands are to immediately declare Bir Shreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir (Mahananda Setu) free of tolls, to stop collecting tolls and ensure smooth movement of the people of the district and to take necessary administrative measures for the sake of economic development and regional communication system of the district. At this time the lease takers are urged not to buy the upcoming tenders and not to sell the tenders to the concerned authorities. Besides, the speakers warned that if effective steps are not taken regarding toll-free bridges by July 1, continuous program will be announced.Speakers in the press conference expressed hope that the government, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the relevant authorities will soon declare the Mahananda bridge toll-free by giving importance to this long-standing demand of the people.
