Women journalists want justice for oppression and torture

GD at Shahbag police station on allegations of misinformation and harassment against women journalists

Dhaka, May 7, 2026: A General Diary (GD) has been registered at the Shahbag police station in the capital on allegations of defamation and physical assault by secretly recording videos of journalists’ own conversations while performing their professional duties in front of the National Press Club. GD No-440 and Tracking No-Th13D5th.

GDkari Parul Akhtar complained that on May 4 at noon, some persons secretly recorded video of the complainant and colleagues’ own conversation while on duty at Dhaka Press Club area. At that time, when they asked the reason for recording the video, the accused attacked them and physically hurt them, it is alleged.

In the GD, the names of three persons namely Jai Kristafar Biswas, Farhad Mia and Aftab Shuvo have been mentioned as accused. An address in Hatirjheel Mahanagar project area is mentioned as their address.

The complaint also said that the video was published on the social media Facebook on the night of May 6 from a page named “The News”. As a result, it has been claimed that GDkari and related journalists have to suffer social, personal and professional defamation.

According to the GD, legal action and case may be filed in future based on specific information regarding the incident. At the same time, a request has been made to the Shahbag police station to investigate the matter and take necessary measures.

This incident has created concern among journalists. Jasmin Akhter Jui, former executive secretary of Dhaka Journalist Union, said, “A group is systematically trying to tarnish the image of journalists. Such activities can hinder the environment of independent journalism.” He also said that if there is any complaint against journalists working in mobile and online media, the concerned media houses should also play a responsible role. He also demanded a fair investigation of the incident and legal action against the culprits.

Hamid Mohammad Jasim, Daily Destiny, Senior Vice President: Kishoreganj Journalist Forum-Dhaka Permanent Member: National Press Club,Internationally renowned photographer Fojit Sheikh Babu, Md. Nazrul Islam, Dainik Asia Bani, Shanto Mandal, Ilyas Hossain and many others protested against this woman Nipin and created news calling them as fake journalists and promoted them on their own Facebook page Tha Naws.

According to journalist leaders, smearing, intimidation and harassment against media workers can pose a threat to the environment of free journalism and expression. Therefore, they expressed the opinion that it is necessary to ensure an impartial investigation and speedy trial of such incidents.
