Accountability of school managing committee is essential in building an enlightened society
The future of a nation depends on its education system. Another is its management system which is closely related to the learning environment, discipline, infrastructural development and overall progress of an educational institution. A school managing committee or governing body is not just an administrative structure; It is one of the most important means of ensuring the development, transparency and accountability of an educational institution.
Md. Didarul Alam announced that he will present the activities undertaken during his previous tenure and future plans to the public after taking charge for the second time as the ad hoc committee president of Mainamati High School and College. This initiative to highlight the current status, past achievements and future plans of the organization directly on social media is undoubtedly commendable. Not only this, it can also be a role model for other educational institutions in the country.
In our country, it is often seen that various promises are made in the management committee of educational institutions, but no account is presented to the public about the extent to which those promises have been implemented at the end of the responsibility. In many cases students, parents, teachers or even local people do not know what developmental work a committee has done or failed to do during their tenure. As a result, a culture of accountability is not developed and many promising initiatives are slowly lost.
It is a sad but true fact that in some cases the position of School Managing Committee is used as a means of displaying status or personal influence rather than service. Sometimes there is undue interference in the recruitment process, sometimes there is a lack of transparency in financial management, and sometimes there is a tendency to place personal or political interests above the interests of the organization. As a result, the learning environment is damaged, the normal progress of the institution is disrupted.
Taking charge of running an educational institution does not just mean presiding over meetings;Rather, taking responsibility for building a better future for students. So a president or a member can present the true status of the organization to the people while taking charge. For example, a brief report on the quality of education, results, infrastructure, teacher shortage, financial situation, co-curricular activities and other challenges can be published. Likewise, an assessment of what progress has been made, what tasks have been completed and what tasks are still left can be presented to the public at the end of the specified period of responsibility.
If this kind of practice is introduced, on the one hand, the confidence of the people will increase, on the other hand, responsible leadership will also be developed. Future committees will also be aware of their work evaluation and accountability. It will establish a development culture centered not on individuals but on institutions.
Participation of teachers, parents, alumni, local dignitaries and students is also important in the development of educational institutions. A school is not just a building; It symbolizes the dreams, traditions and future of a society. Hence ensuring transparency, participation and accountability in its development and management is the need of the hour.
If we really want to improve the quality of education, we need to develop a new culture in the management of educational institutions. An important part of that culture is to present a realistic picture at the time of taking office and to present to the public an account of the achievements at the end of office. This will not only improve the school, but also promote good governance, accountability and responsible leadership practices in the society.
Enlightened society requires enlightened leadership. And one of the characteristics of enlightened leadership is transparency, accountability and commitment to public welfare. We hope that the management committee of every educational institution in the country will adopt such positive practices and establish a new paradigm of educational development.
* Identity is not a position, but a responsibility; Accountability should be the foundation of educational development.*
