Relationship between Independent Journalism and Democracy: Current Context-Mohammed Mananjur Hossain

Freedom of expression, accountability and right to information are the cornerstones of democracy. The force that plays the most important role in keeping these three elements in place is independent journalism. An independent and responsible media not only reports the news, but also monitors the activities of various institutions of the state, government and society and presents the truth to the people. This is why journalism is called the “fourth pillar” of democracy.

In today’s world, due to the wide spread of information technology, there has been a great change in the way news is delivered. Information is now reaching people instantly due to social media, online news portals and digital platforms. However, in this era of speed, as the freedom of journalism has created new opportunities, it has also brought many challenges. Fake news, rumours, misleading propaganda and political influence often obscure the truth.

In a democratic state, independent journalism acts as the voice of the people. Incidents of wrong decisions, corruption, irregularities or human rights violations by the government or those in power are revealed through investigative reporting by the media. As a result people become aware and an environment of accountability is created. Ensuring the freedom of the press is therefore essential for a strong democracy.

Journalists in different countries of the world, including Bangladesh, are facing various obstacles. Sometimes political pressure, sometimes economic constraints, sometimes security risks hinder their professional freedom. In many cases investigative journalism becomes difficult to conduct. As a result, people’s right to know is undermined and democratic practices can be weakened.

However, the responsibility of journalists is equally important with freedom. Fact-checking, objectivity, ethics and public interest are fundamental principles of journalism. Abuse of freedom or biased reporting undermines public trust in the media. Hence, a combination of freedom and responsibility is a prerequisite for a healthy media system. In the current context, the development of independent journalism is essential to strengthen democracy. The media should be given the opportunity to work in an environment free from fear and pressure, and at the same time, emphasis should be placed on improving the professional skills and ethical standards of journalists. Because the stronger the flow of true and reliable information, the more integrated and effective democracy will be.

Independent journalism is not just a profession; It is one of the main forces in protecting people’s rights, ensuring accountability of the state and sustaining democracy. Therefore, for the sake of democracy, the protection and development of independent journalism is the need of the hour.
