Sohag Bhuiyan is ahead in the discussion for the post of General Secretary of Dhaka South Youth Dal

Md. Sohag Bhuiyan is a popular name in BNP’s student politics due to the street movement, one case after another, the gruesome experience of remand and long-term organizational activism. Currently, he is serving as the president of Dhaka Metropolitan East Branch of Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal. There is a strong discussion in the political arena now, this student leader is in a strong position as the general secretary in the upcoming Dhaka Metropolitan South Juba Dal committee.

According to party sources, Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal leaders and activists, Sohag Bhuiyan, who has been active in field politics for a long time, has become known as one of the trusted young leaders of Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarek Rahman. Especially anti-government movement, implementation of BNP’s central program and consistent presence in organizational activities have brought him to the discussion of important positions of the youth party.

Comilla’s son Sohag Bhuiyan’s political rise revolved around capital-centric student politics. BNP’s erstwhile 2013-14 hartal blockade program was largely due to his rajpatha contribution which made him the first to come into the limelight. His organizational identity was created by serving as the founder general secretary of Shahjahanpur Thana Chhatra Dal. After that he was elected Joint General Secretary, Number 1 Joint Convener and last President of Dhaka Metropolitan East Chhatra Dal. Party leaders feel that his position has been strengthened consistently in the reorganized committees of the Chhatra Dal.

Sohag Bhuiyan’s name was officially announced as the president of the partial committee of Dhaka Metropolitan East Chhatra Dal announced in December 2024. Since the announcement of that committee, its influence on student politics in the capital became more visible.

More than 76 cases were filed against Sohag Bhuiyan for participating in opposition political programs during the Awami League government. His colleagues said that he was arrested and remanded several times during the agitation and struggle. Especially the blockade of BNP and Chhatra Dal in the capital,He became known as a “field worker” among Trinamool leaders and activists due to his active role in protests and marches.

In 2018, police and Awami League brutally tortured Sohag’s family to arrest him in front of the central office of BNP in the much-discussed clash with the police. Law and order forces arrested 21 members of his family from different parts of Bangladesh to arrest him. He was kept missing for five days after his arrest. An experience of being remanded in the DB office recently came to new discussion on social media. A fellow Chhatra Dal leader of that time mentioned in his memoirs, how they had to spend day after day with fear, stress and torture. He claimed that when Sohag was taken away one morning, fellow inmates feared that he might not return alive. Later he was brought back ill. After that incident, many leaders and activists are known as “sacrificed and persecuted student leaders”.

According to party sources, Sohag Bhuiyan was jailed more than ten times and was also jailed in a case that was sentenced to ten years and three months.

He was shot and arrested from the BNP party office on 7th December 2022, his role was visible on 29th July and 28th October 2023 and his role was immense in carrying out all the programs of the party in the anti-Hasina movement. In addition, in July 2024 public uprising, in various places including Shahbagh, Khilgaon, Rampura, he protested with ordinary students from the front row on the streets. He was shot while protesting in the capital’s Kakrail, due to which he is a popular student leader in various circles during the July movement. the

According to political analysts, the current politics of BNP is increasing the appreciation of leaders who have been on the streets for a long time and who are victims of torture. There is a central thought of bringing leaders from the Chhatra Dal to important positions in the Yuva Dal. And in that reckoning, Sohag Bhuiyan’s name is now in the center of discussion.He was also seen in various organizational activities of the Dhaka Metropolitan East Chhatra Dal. Recently, the news of his role in the organizational decisions and restructuring of several units under the jurisdiction of Mahanagar East was published. Apart from this, he was also seen leading the Chhatra Dal’s founding anniversary, protest marches and field-based programs.

Talking to the concerned leaders about the possible committee of the Juba Dal, it is said that the Center is now looking for leaders who are active in the field, organizationally acceptable and efficient in implementing central directives. Considering that, Sohag Bhuiyan is seen as one of the strongest contenders for the post of General Secretary.

However, the names of several former student leaders and old Yuba Dal leaders are also in discussion in Yuva Dal politics. As a result, who will get the important post in the end will depend on the final decision of the BNP High Command. Still, Sohag Bhuiyan is one of the most talked about names in the calculations of the political arena and in the discussions of the grassroots.When asked about this, Sohag Bhuiyan said that if the team wants to give me the responsibility, I will try to fulfill it properly and faithfully. But in all cases party decision is the biggest for me. Moreover, I have full confidence in the Party High Command Honorable Prime Minister BNP Chairman Tarek Rahman regarding the appointment, the decision he will take in this matter will be final.
